How Does Mips Architecture Work?

In the middle of the 1980s, a group of Stanford researchers created the RISC (reduced instruction set computing) instruction set architecture known as MIPS. Microprocessor without Interlocked Pipeline Stages was the name’s initial acronym; however, as other processors became more sophisticated and for performance reasons, interlocks between pipeline stages were eventually reintroduced. Based on performance and ease of design, a processor without interlocking pipeline stages was chosen. Interlocks would force other pipeline phases to wait until the execute unit finished operations like integer division, which takes a long time. Since it idles certain processor areas, this undermines the goal of pipelining. Idling is eliminated when all clock phases are reduced to one cycle, but the clock may have to run slower as a result.

Instruction Fetch (IF), Instruction Decode/Operand Fetch (ID), Execute (EX), Memory Access (MEM), and Write Back (WB) are the five stages of the traditional RISC pipeline that MIPS uses. Because MIPS is a load-store architecture, values must be explicitly read from memory with a special load instruction and written to memory with a store instruction in order to perform arithmetic on data; arithmetic instructions only operate on registers.

MIPS, in my opinion, is a really great architecture if you’re interested in learning about ISAs, computer architecture, and computer organization because it’s clear-cut and easy to understand but doesn’t sacrifice essential functionality.


Even for microprocessors and associated systems aimed at the high end server product space, power delivery and dissipation limits have become a significant design constraint. Power has always prevailed over performance as the main design constraint at the low end of the performance spectrum. The greater demand for more functionality and speed has, however, made the world of handheld devices more severely power constrained, despite the modest increases in battery life expectations…
